Washington: Actor Ming-Na Wen has joined the lineup for the upcoming 'Karate Kid' film, according to a report by Variety, a US media outlet.
Details about Wen's character in the movie are still kept secret, much like the film's plot. The movie will be helmed by Jonathan Entwistle, known for his work on Netflix's 'I Am Not Okay With This' and 'The End of the F--ing World'. The screenplay will be written by 'Peter Rabbit' scribe Rob Lieber, with Karen Rosenfelt serving as producer.
Previously announced cast members include Ben Wang, star of 'American Born Chinese', in the lead role. Additionally, Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio will be reprising their roles from earlier films in the franchise. According to Variety, Joshua Jackson and Sadie Stanley are also set to feature.
The 'Karate Kid' movies have grossed over USD 618 million worldwide and inspired the Emmy-nominated Netflix series 'Cobra Kai'. This series, created by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, continues the story years after the original films, reigniting the rivalry between Macchio's Daniel and Johnny Lawrence (played by William Zabka).
Wen is well-known for her role as Fennec Shand in the Disney+ series 'The Book of Boba Fett', a spinoff of 'The Mandalorian'. She was recently seen in the second season of HBO's 'Hacks'. In 2019, Wen was honored as a Disney Legend for her contributions to various Disney projects, including 'Mulan', 'Marvel's Agents of Shield', and 'The Joy Luck Club'. She also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in May 2023, as per Variety's report.
The release date for the film is set for December 13, 2024.
