New Delhi, India: According to an official statement, the Defence Ministry approved the procurement of arms and military equipment worth Rs 7,965 crore on Tuesday, including 12 light utility helicopters from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. At a meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), the ministry's highest decision-making body on the subject, the procurement proposals were approved. The DAC also approved the procurement of a Lynx U2 naval gunfire control system from Bharat Electronics Limited, which will improve the tracking and engagement capabilities of naval warships, according to the ministry's statement.
The DAC also approved Hindustan Aeronautics Limited's "mid-life upgrade of Dornier aircraft" on Tuesday to boost naval capacity for maritime reconnaissance and coastal surveillance, according to the report. "A global procurement case of naval guns has been foreclosed with these guns' quantity added to the upgraded super rapid gun mount (SRGM) being manufactured by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) as a further impetus to 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India)," it said.
These SRGMs will be installed on Indian Navy warships and will provide niche capabilities such as engaging fast manoeuvring targets with guided munitions and range extensions, according to the statement.
