On Sunday, the Ministry of Women and Child Development proposed relaxation in provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) to render bail to the women undertrial in jails, who have probably spent one-third of their sentence in jail.
The amendments have been recommended to the Section 436A of CrPC, which talks about the bail of a lady in jail after she has completed half of her maximum sentence.
They have also demanded a separate arrangement made for mothers jailed in the postnatal stage to be allowed to meet their children. The ministry has also made some additional amendments regarding voting rights of these women.
The report includes an entire list of about 134 recommendations for the welfare of the women under arrest, and intend to deal with issues regarding pregnancy and childbirth inside the jails. It also considers their mental health and counts for their amalgamation into the society after they are released.
The report is slated to be passed on to the Ministry of Home Affairs and expects its issues to be considered and amendments to be executed.
Minister for Women and Child Development, Maneka Gandhi, supported the initiative and affirmed that now we may expect the women in the jails to be treated in a better way than before.
