KOHIMA: The Naga Club building, located in the centre of Kohima City, was vandalised and destroyed in the early hours of May 27, police said.

An umbrella organisation for Naga students and youth, the Naga Students' Federation (NSF), as well as the offices of the Kohima Press Club and All Nagaland College Students' Union were all headquartered in the Naga Club building.

According to the initial report, the event allegedly occurred about three in the morning, Additional SP of Kohima, Relo T. Aye stated. He also claimed that they have received a FIR from the NSF and that an inquiry is being conducted by a four-person Special inquiry Team (SIT) under his leadership.

While a more thorough investigation is being conducted, police have found a number of tools, including machetes used by the criminals and sharp objects used to ruin the office.

NSF President Kegwayhun Tep told reporters in Kohima, "We were protecting and preserving the Naga Club building as the Heritage of Naga people, but it is very unfortunate that miscreants had not only damaged the building but it is suspected that the historical records of the Nagas have also been destroyed." The miscreants have not been recognised, but a FIR has been filed in North Police Station Kohima, the man said. "I got the information around 4 a.m., and by the time I reached those people had already left," he said.

About Naga Club: The Naga Club building was constructed in the early 20th century and served as the meeting place for the Naga Club, an influential organization formed in 1918. The club played a crucial role in promoting Naga interests during the colonial period when the region was under British rule.

The Naga Club was established by educated Naga leaders who aimed to safeguard the political and social rights of the Naga people. It sought to foster unity among the various Naga tribes and protect their cultural heritage. The club's members actively participated in discussions and negotiations with the British authorities regarding the political future of the Naga Hills.

Over the years, the Naga Club building has witnessed many important meetings, discussions, and decisions related to the Naga political struggle. It stands as a physical testament to the Naga people's resilience and their pursuit of self-determination.
