The Mizoram Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department today launched a pilot project worth Rs 18.95 crore to achieve self-sufficiency in meat and poultry products. The project was launched under the state’s flagship Socio-Economic Development Policy (SEDP) programme to achieve self-sufficiency in meat and poultry products. The project, under the aegis of the animal husbandry and veterinary department, is expected to benefit 1,020 beneficiaries in eight districts in 2019-2020 fiscal, said state animal husbandry and veterinary minister Dr. K Beichhua.

As per the statement of the minister, Rs 548.65 lakh will be released as the first installment to beneficiaries of different trades in the meat and poultry sectors. “This, in turn, will uplift the state economy in the near future,” he said, while hoping that beneficiaries will make a profitable living.

Speaking at the launch, Beichhua, said that the present production of meat and poultry products in the state is way short of the total requirement. Scarcity has been further aggravated by the recent ban on the import of pigs and other meat products from neighboring states and countries due to Covid-19 and to prevent the spread of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) and African Swine Fever

According to an official of the department, thousands of pigs died when PRRS hit the state in 2013, 2016, and 2018.
