New Delhi: PM Modi's cabinet has approved the updating of the National Population Register (NPR). Under this, a database of citizens of the entire country will be created. However, this will not be proof of citizenship. It is used by the government to implement its schemes. The cabinet has also approved a budget allocation of Rs 8,700 crore for this entire exercise.

The NPR will be updated in 2020 before the 2021 census before the NPR was also updated in 2010 before the 2011 census. All the states and union territories except Assam will complete the work of updating the National Population Register from April 2020 to September 2020.

Under the National Population Register (NPR), a census exercise is conducted from house to house across the country to prepare a database of citizens from April 1, 2020, to September 30, 2020. The main objective of this register is to create a database of the comprehensive identity of common residents of the country. This data will also include biometric details along with demographics. In this, information such as name, address, education, occupation of the person will be recorded. The information recorded in the NPR will be based on the details provided by the people themselves and will not be proof of citizenship.
