Srinagar: Modi government has announced to make direct purchase of apples of Jammu and Kashmir and to pay directly to the growers through bank account. Officials have informed about this on Tuesday. Procurement from apple farmers will be responsible for the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Association of India (NAFED). Apple procurement will be completed by 15 December.
The government has taken this step following reports that some terrorists have threatened apple growers not to sell their produce in the market. Apple farmers are being threatened by terrorists after the government abolished the special status given to Jammu and Kashmir under Section 370 and divided the state into two Union Territories. Now a government official has said that the purchase will be done directly from the apple growers and the state administration will ensure that they are paid directly to the bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
The official has said that all categories of apples A, B, C will be purchased in all apple product districts of Jammu and Kashmir. Apart from this, direct purchase will also be done from the wholesale markets of Sopore, Shopian and Srinagar. Prices of different categories of apples will be determined by the Price Committee. This committee will also have a member from the National Horticulture Board. The Quality Committee will ensure proper grading of apple.
