Kolkata: West Bengal CM and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee on Monday said that the Central government has frozen all bank accounts of missionaries of the charity set up by Mother Teresa. Mamata said the central government's move left 22,000 patients and staff of the charitable group at Kolkata headquarters without food and medicines. The Bengal CM said, "Even though the law is paramount, human efforts should not be compromised.''
Mamata Banerjee tweeted, "Shocked to hear that on Christmas, the Union Ministry has frozen all bank accounts of Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity in India. Her 22,000 patients and staff have been left without food and medicines. Even though the law is paramount, human efforts should not be compromised. However, there has been no response from the organization of the Centre on the matter so far.
In Gujarat, an FIR was registered against a children's home for girls in the Vadodara district for allegedly attempting to convert. The children's home is run by Missionaries for Charity. Talking about the allegations, the police said that the girls were being pressured to read the Bible and that some marriages of people from other communities were being conducted in accordance with Christian customs. However, a nun working in the institute had dismissed the allegations.
