New Delhi: A landmark order has been issued by the Modi government for students seeking medical education. It has announced the introduction of reservations for other backward castes (OBC) and economically weaker sections (EWS). This includes undergraduate and post-graduate medical/dental courses (MBBS/2009). MD / MS / Diploma / BDS / for MDS) reservation of 27% to OBC and 10% to those with EWS quota. The benefit will be under the All India Quota Scheme (AIQ). The scheme will start from the session 2021-22.

According to the information, about 5,550 students will benefit from it. This will benefit 1,500 OBC (in MBBS), 2,500 OBC students in postgraduation per year. There will be 550 EWS per year in MBBS and 1,000 EWS students in postgraduation. State that out of the total seats in government medical colleges, 15% of the UG (undergraduate) and 50% of PG (postgraduate) seats come in the All India quota.

Tell you that there was no quota under AIQ till 2007. But then in 2007, the apex court directed the SC to make a reservation of 15 percent and ST 7.5 percent. The central government had already committed to extending the benefit of reservation to backward classes and EWS. PM Modi had also held a review meeting a few days ago to implement it. The demand for reservations for OBC under the All India Quota had been rising for a long time. PM Modi had called for an early solution in a review meeting on July 26.
