New Delhi: Amid massive opposition from agricultural bills, the Central government has announced a Minimum Support Price (MSP) for six Rabi crops of 2020-21. This MSP will be effective for the years 2021-2022. However, the increase in MSP that the government has announced is lower than last year.

The MSP of wheat has been increased by only 2.6 per cent, the lowest growth in the last 11 years. The MSP announced for other crops like barley, gram, masoor, mustard and safflower has also been increased less than last year. According to a statement issued by the Centre, the PM Modi-led Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved this increase in MSP for Rabi crops. This increased MSP will be applicable for 2021-2022. The statement also said that the increase in MSP is in line with the swaminathan commission recommendations.

According to the statement, the MSP of wheat for rabi crop 2020-21 has been fixed at Rs 1,975 per quintal which is 2.6% higher than the MSP fixed for wheat per quintal for 2019-20. A media report says that the increase in wheat MSP in percentage terms is the lowest in 11 years. According to the report, the msp of wheat was increased by just 1.85% in 2009-10 to Rs 1100 per quintal. In 2008-09, wheat was priced at Rs 1,080 per quintal.
