New Delhi: The Modi government at the Centre has extended service to Attorney General Kottayan Katankot Venugopal for the second time. The central government has extended Venugopal's tenure by one year. That is, Venugopal will now continue as attorney general of the country till June 30, 2022. Venugopal was appointed as the 15th Attorney General by the PM Modi-led Central Government for three years on July 1, 2017.

Venugopal's three-year term was completed on June 30 last year. The government had extended Venugopal's term by one year after the term was over. Even after this extension of service, Venugopal's term ended on June 30. Two days ago, the government announced a second extension of service to Venugopal.

Venugopal had earlier served as additional solicitor general of the country from 1977 to 1979 when the country was headed by Morarji Desai. Venugopal was awarded the country's third-highest civilian decoration Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2002 for his commendable contribution to the public sector. The Attorney General is the first law officer of the Government of India.
