Modi government implements 'Consumer Protection Act' for customers

New Delhi: The Modi government of the Center has implemented a new law on consumer protection from today i.e. Monday. The Consumer Protection Act-2019 has been implemented by issuing notifications from July 20. This law is very strict and gives more rights to the consumer. The new law Consumer Protection Act-2019 has replaced the Consumer Protection Act 1986.

If the government claims, then for the coming 50 years, no new law will be required for the customers. As soon as the implementation of this new law, many new rules have come into force to protect the interests of consumers which were not in the old act. After the introduction of new laws, consumer disputes will be resolved in a timely, effective, and speedy manner. Under the new law, a Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has been established along with the Consumer Courts. According to the new law, the shopkeeper can now be punished from six months to life imprisonment for selling fake or adulterated products and the customer can get compensation ranging from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. In the general case, the customer can get compensation of up to 1 lakh rupees.

If the consumer is directly or indirectly harmed by the product sold, the seller can be imprisoned for 7 years and the consumer can be compensated up to Rs 5 lakh. Not only this, if the consumer dies due to such products, its family members can get compensation up to Rs 10 lakh and the seller can get life imprisonment. Action will also be taken on issuing misleading advertisements to customers in the new act. Online and teleshopping companies have also been included in the new act for the first time.
