We all know that onion is used in everyone's home and no one is unaware how expensive this onion is getting day by day. The state-owned trading company MMTC is now preparing to import onions from Turkey. 11 thousand tonnes of onions are to be imported through this import deal. The company is already importing about six thousand tonnes of onions from Egypt. The government is importing onions as part of a plan to control the unbridled price of onions in the domestic market. The decision to import 1.2 lakh tonnes of onions was approved by the cabinet last month.

According to sources, it has been learned that MMTC has signed an agreement to import 11 thousand tonnes of onions with Turkey. The consignment is expected to reach India by January, but nothing like this can happen. Earlier, the company had signed an agreement to import 6,090 tonnes of onion from Egypt. This consignment will reach next week. The central government is issuing imported onions at a price of Rs 52-55 per kg to the state governments.

Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan had said last month that onion production is expected to fall by about 26% in the current Kharif season. Along with this, he said that the government is making every effort to control onion prices.
