The most frightening effect of this additional rain has been seen in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, where about 144 people have lost their lives since last Friday. Nearly 20 lakh residents of Patna, the capital of Bihar, situated on the banks of the Ganges, have been bereft of everyday items due to waterlogging in the streets.
In Maharashtra, the highest number of 371 people have lost their lives in flood-related accidents such as falling walls or buildings. The Indian Meteorological Department has released an estimate of the end of monsoon by October 10. This is expected to provide some relief in flood-affected areas. However, according to this, the four-month-long monsoon season, which runs from June 1 to September, will end almost a month late this time. Earlier in 1961, the monsoon ended most lately.
