At the closing ceremony of a yoga training camp held in New Delhi on 8 April 1977, the then Prime Minister Morarji Desai called for the start of yoga classes in schools for the first time. Then this yoga training camp was organized in the nation's capital jointly by Kaivalyadham and Union Ministry of Education and Social Welfare in Lonavala district of Maharashtra.

Addressing the 150 trainees who attended this camp, Morarji Desai said that yoga is an important component of our culture. Due to devaluation in cultural values, many problems had to be faced at present which should be overcome. The government cannot promote yoga alone depending on itself.
