A Prime Minister in the country who was awarded the highest civilian honour of India and Pakistan. This award has not been given to any other Prime Minister till now. His name was Morarji Desai. The political popularity of Morarji Desai and his involvement in a democracy can also be gauged from the fact that while India conferred her highest civilian honour Bharat Ratna, Pakistan also conferred upon her the highest honour mark.

Apart from this award, Morarji Desai had another speciality in becoming the Prime Minister that he was also the first non-Congress Prime Minister of the country. He was the sixth Prime Minister of India. His tenure lasted from 1977 to 1979. Even though in Congress, his name used to appear as the candidate of this post, but he always remained behind in this race. The post of Prime Minister was destined only after Indira Gandhi's government fell in 1977 after splitting from Congress.

Morarji Desai was born on 29 February 1896 in a Brahmin family at a place called Bhadeli in Gujarat. He died on 10 April 1995 at the age of 99. His father Ranchodji Desai was a school teacher in Bhavnagar (Saurashtra). But after committing depression, he committed suicide. Morarji Desai was married on the third day of his father's death. Desai did her studies from Bombay at that time. While studying in college, he had heard the speeches of Mahatma Gandhi, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and other Congress leaders.
