Rape victim MP Atul Rai faints during court appearance, hospitalised

Lucknow: Ghosi Lok Sabha MP Atul Rai, who had come to appear before a Varanasi court in connection with the case of abetting the suicide of a rape victim, suddenly deteriorated. He fell unconscious on the ground in the court premises. On this, the people present around picked him up and took him to the court. Meanwhile, ambulances were also called. He was brought in an ambulance from the court. Doctors are treating him in the ambulance itself.  

Till 2.30 pm, he could not make judicial remand in the court. An application was moved on behalf of Atul Rai's lawyer. The order is yet to come. Lawyers are still in court. Atul Rai has been imprisoned in jail since becoming an MP. On May 1, 2019, a case was registered against him on charges including rape at the Lanka police station in Varanasi.  

The woman, a resident of Ballia, had filed a case against Atul Rai just before the Lok Sabha elections. During the elections, Atul Rai remained absconding to avoid arrest. After winning the election, he surrendered in the Court of Varanasi on June 22, 2019. Since then, he has been imprisoned in jail.
