The first Kisan train of the region and also of the Western Railway, carrying 180-tonne onion, was flagged-off from the city for New Guwahati on Thursday. In all 20 general category coaches are attached in this Kisan Rail. The train will leave for New Guwahati every Tuesday from the city’s Laxmibai Nagar station. After flagging off the train, MP Shankar Lalwani said, "There is a lot of enthusiasm among the farmers about the first Kisan train of Western Railway. Such trains will increase the interstate trade of farmers' produce. This will help us in realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's dream of a self-reliant India".

Vineet Gupta, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Ratlam informed that the train will halt at Saint Hirdaram Nagar, Bina, Jhansi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Barabanki, Chhapra (Rural), Hajipur, Katihar, Kishanganj and New Jalpaiguri stations in both directions. The operation of Kisan train on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) basis was announced by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in this year's budget to ensure speedy transportation of perishable things like fruits, vegetables, flowers, milk, meat and fish. The transportation of the farmers’ produce will be done at subsidized rates.
