On Friday, office-goers in and around Mumbai were inconvenienced as suburban local trains on the Western line experienced delay of 15-20 minutes during the rush hour. Lakhs of passengers, mainly office-goers use Mumbai Suburban rail network during morning and evening hours. A delay during these hours can cause major problems on the severely stressed local train network. A goods train broke down this morning near Mahim on the Western line. Raiway authorities moved in immediately and resolved the issue but the time taken was enough to disturb the train schedule.

However, at the time of publishing this story, the local trains on the Western Line were late by 15 to 20 minutes. During morning rush hours, a delay of 10 minutes is enough to cause major inconvenience to commuters.The collective anger often gets directed at Railway authorities and even local train motormen (drivers). There has been large number of incidents of angry commuters blaming motormen for train delay. Situation often turns violent and a number of violent incidents have taken place in past when the motormen have been beaten up by the angry mob. Railway authorities, therefore, move-in quickly to resolve any issue that arises during morning and evening rush hours.

On February 19, chilli powder was thrown at a motorman driving a train on the Central Line of Mumbai suburban train network.The incident happened when protestors were agitating on the Western Railway line at Nalasopara in the aftermath of the terror strike at Central police Reserve Force (CRPF) personnel in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district on February 14.

Despite the severe burning sensation in his eyes, 48-year-old Singh kept driving the train as halting it would have led to an inordinate delay on the railway line.The motorman was felicitated by the Railways later on.
