Mumbai: A shocking case has come to light from Mumbai in Maharashtra. The eyes of admit Nagesh Yalappa, who was admitted to the ICU of Rajawadi Hospital here, were severed by rats last Tuesday. The hospital is run by Shiv Sena-occupied Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar has said that the patient is in a bad condition. They have ordered an inquiry into the incident. In fact, the patient was having breathing problems. He was admitted to the hospital on Sunday (June 20, 2021) after suffering from fever and kidney pain. He is on ventilator support.
The extent of damage to the patient's eye due to the incident is yet to be ascertained. Dr Vidya Thakur, Superintendent, Hospital, said that the patient's eyesight is safe. Meanwhile, the patient's sister Yashoda Yallapa has shown pictures of eye damage. According to media reports, Yallapa said, "The ownership rights of this hospital are with the BMC. On Tuesday I saw a bandage on his eye and saw blood underneath. Where else can ordinary people like us go? The nurses had said that only two people are on duty and the number is very low for ICU. The security guard tried to pull me out after the incident".
Let us tell you that this is not the first time that such an incident has taken place in a hospital in Mumbai. Earlier in 2017, two patients were also dogled by rats at Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivli. One of the hospital staff told the story of its plight and said, "This hospital has been a victim of administrative neglect for a long time. The hospital superintendent has been demanding funds for renovation for the last five years. Former MP Gurdas Kamat had constructed the emergency medical service wing of the hospital in 2006 with his fund. Even after being one of the largest hospitals in the eastern suburbs of Rajawadi, BMC is not sanctioning funds for the same".
