Mumbai's 2025-26 Budget Unveils Parking App and Big Push for Electric Buses

MUMBAI: BMC Budget 2025 - The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced its biggest-ever budget of Rs.74,427.41-crfor the 2025-26 financial year on Tuesday, February 4th. The budget focuses on infrastructure, education, and making Mumbai more sustainable. A major focus is the plan to launch a parking app to tackle Mumbai's traffic congestion.

BMC’s New Parking App: What It Means for Mumbaikars

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation plans to develop a parking app through its traffic department. This application will allow citizens to book parking slots in advance and make payments online. The goal is to make finding parking easier and reduce traffic jams caused by vehicles searching for spots.

Electric Buses Get a Boost

BMC’s administrator Bhushan Gagrani announced that Rs.1,000-Cr from the budget will go to the BEST - Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport. An additional Rs.250-cr, from the fifteenth  Finance Commission funds, will be used to buy more electric buses. This brings the total budget for BEST to Rs.1,250 cr. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corp will also contribute Rs.128.65 crore towards the purchase of 2,000 electric buses, covering 5 percent  of the total cost.

Focus on Sustainable Development

The BMC's budget highlights many  steps for sustainable growth. This includes improving green spaces, healthcare, traffic management, pedestrian walkways, and smart transportation systems.

Traffic Projects in Progress

Access Control Project: Launched in October 2024 by Maharashtra's then Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, this project focuses on upgrading one junction on the Eastern Express Highway and three junctions on the Western Express Highway and the work is underway.

Area Traffic Control (ATC) System: The city is rolling out an ATC system at major signal junctions to better manage traffic flow.

Walkability Initiatives: The BMC is working on creating pedestrian-friendly footpaths to encourage walking and reduce road congestion.

Deputy Chief Minister and Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde praised the budget for focusing on health, education, and the environment, ensuring the common man’s needs are met.
