Mumps, also known as 'Galasua' in some regions, is an infectious disease caused by a virus. In Kerala, this problem is rapidly spreading, with reports indicating 190 cases reported in a single day. This disease causes swelling in the parotid salivary glands, which can be extremely painful. Symptoms may start appearing 2 to 3 weeks after exposure to the virus. Here, we discuss the symptoms and prevention methods for this disease.

Symptoms of Mumps Virus:
Common symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, and loss of appetite. The main symptoms include swelling and tenderness in one or more of the salivary glands, particularly the parotid glands located near the jawline.

This swelling can make it difficult to swallow or chew. Some individuals may experience discomfort or pain while opening their mouths or consuming sour foods. In some cases, complications such as meningitis, encephalitis, orchitis (swelling of the testicles in males), or oophoritis (swelling of the ovaries in females) may occur.

Preventive Measures:
Vaccination and good hygiene practices are essential for preventing mumps.
The MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine is highly effective in preventing mumps. It is typically administered in two doses during childhood to provide long-lasting immunity.
Additionally, practicing good hygiene habits such as washing hands frequently with soap and water is important.
Avoid sharing utensils or water with infected individuals.
To reduce the risk of mumps transmission, cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.

In conclusion, mumps is a contagious viral infection that can cause significant discomfort and complications if left untreated. Vaccination and maintaining good hygiene practices are key to preventing the spread of this disease. By following these preventive measures, individuals can reduce their risk of contracting mumps and protect themselves and others from its consequences."
