The sudden change of heart will draw even more attention to Musk's plans for Twitter, a week after seeing thousands of employees laid off and a sharp drop in ad spending as a result of advertisers' concerns about the site's direction.
The disastrous roll-out preceded the eagerly anticipated debut of a redesigned subscription model, whereby users would be able to access the site's famous Blue Tick for a fee of US$7.99, although Musk has also stated that Cost will vary by region.
Questions have been raised about whether public figures or media outlets will pay for blue ticks, which have been used to indicate the authenticity of an account. Observers regarded the official gray tag as a solution to that issue.
New official labels began rolling in on Wednesday, in the accounts of businesses such as Apple or BMW, as well as publicly accessible ones such as the White House and important media outlets. But for many of them, it disappeared just a few hours later.
Mentions disappeared from accounts related to Agence France-Presse, BBC News, Pope Francis, or controversial rapper Kanye West, who was awarded the "official" badge.

Musk attempted some damage control during a panel for advertisers that aired on Twitter, admitting that there was still a lot of work to be done to get the site where he wanted it.
"On the software side, we have a lot of work to do. I really can't stress this enough," he said.
Musk regained control of Twitter after a lengthy legal dispute in which the business tycoon attempted to back out of a deal that many think he overpaid.
On Tuesday, it was revealed that Musk had sold $4 billion worth of Tesla stock to help pay off a deal in which he took on massive amounts of debt.

One way to counter the decline in advertisers since Musk took control of the company is the US$7.99 subscription idea. Musk claimed that it was necessary for Twitter to sack half of its 7,500 employees last week because the business was losing US$4 million every day.
