New Delhi: Nearly 80 per cent of the scholarships under 20 central government schemes were given to Muslim students in 2018-19. According to the National Scholarship Portal run by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Christian students received 7.5 per cent scholarships, Sikh students got five per cent and Hindu students got only 4.7 per cent scholarships.

More than 1.4 crore applications were received during the session out of which 1.08 crore students were awarded scholarships. According to statistics, the students who receive scholarships are 88 lakh Muslims, 8.26 lakh Christians, 5.45 lakh Sikhs and 5.2 lakh Hindus. The scholarship seekers include 1.94 lakh (1.8 per cent) Buddhists and 1.07 lakh (one per cent) Jain students.

During this period, Rs 2,157 crore was disburted in 2018-19 under the scholarship schemes released by 14 central ministries. During this period, out of the total amount, Rs 1,032 crore was spent on Muslim students, Rs 183 crore on Sikh students and Rs 128 crore on Hindu students. The Ministry of Minority Affairs topped the list by giving 77 percent of the total scholarships. The top five states that have been awarded scholarships included West Bengal, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Kerala. On the other hand, the highest amount of money under the scheme was Rs 336 crore to Uttar Pradesh.
