New Delhi: Following the success of the triple talaq bill, a Mumbai-based muslim women group has raised demands to ensure equality for Muslim women like Hindu and Christian laws. The group has demanded the central government to bring 'Muslim Family Law' in Parliament. The Indian Muslim Women's Movement (BMMA) has written a letter to Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on this issue.
The group says that there must be a Muslim family law for gender justice and gender equality. The BMMA argues that legal justice for Muslim women should be ensured through the Muslim Family Law. In the same way, the Hindu Marriage Act and other laws passed in Parliament for Hindu and Christian women.
Zakia Soman, founder of BMMA, said, "Both the Hindu Marriage Act and the Christian Marriage Act were passed and amended on behalf of Parliament. It is only the Muslim Family Law which has not reached Parliament. What we have is a law passed in 1937 on behalf of the British government. Muslim women like Hindu and Christian women do not receive legal equality. Women are given Mehr, property and divorce rights on the Quran, but we do not have any legal framework to protect these rights."
