The historic Qutub Minar of Delhi is considered to be the world's tallest tower made of brick. A huge pillar is also located near this Qutub Minar, which is called 'Iron Pillar'. Very few people know about it, but its history is very old and this column is full of mysteries. Today we are going to tell you about this column. It is believed that this pillar is more than 1600 years old. It is made of pure iron and has been in that place for centuries, but till now it has never rusted.
This iron pillar has been built by King Chandragupta Vikramaditya (Raj 375-412) and it is known from the article written on it, which is of Gupta style. However, some experts believe that it was built much earlier, possibly in 912 BC. Apart from this, some historians also believe that this pillar belongs to Emperor Ashoka, which he had built-in memory of his grandfather Chandragupta Maurya. According to the Sanskrit text inscribed on this pillar, it was erected as a flag pillar. It is believed to have been erected in front of the temple of Lord Vishnu built on the Vishnu hill in Mathura, which was brought to Delhi in 1050 AD by Anangpal, the king of the Tomar dynasty and the founder of Delhi.
The height of this pillar made of pure iron is more than seven meters high while the weight is more than 6000 kg. Chemical testing has shown that this column has been constructed by adding several pieces of 20–30 kg of hot iron, but the biggest question is that the technique of adding pieces of hot iron was developed 1600 years ago. Because those pieces have been added in such a way that not a single joint is visible in the entire column. This is really a big secret.
The most surprising thing in this iron pillar is that there is no rust in it. It is believed that phosphorus was added in excess while making the pillar, so it did not rust. The rusted objects are cleaned with phosphorus because the rust dissolves in it. But phosphorus was discovered in 1669 AD by Hamburg merchant Henning Brand, while the pillar was built about 1200 years before that. So did the people of that time know about phosphorus? If yes, why is there no mention about it in any history book?
