Kohima: As India completes 75 years of independence, the Nagaland government has announced its decision to waive off sentences for certain categories of prisoners convicted by courts with criminal jurisdiction (other than court martial) in the state. An official update from the government on Tuesday said that in exercise of the powers conferred by the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, the Nagaland government has given remission to various categories of prisoners lodged in jails in and outside Nagaland.
In different categories, 30 days for prisoners sentenced to 10 years and above, 20 days for prisoners with sentences ranging from 5 years to 10 years, 10 days for prisoners with sentences ranging from 1 year to 5 years, and 1 A relaxation of 5 days has been given for prisoners sentenced to up to one year.
The exemption granted under the order shall not be admissible to prisoners convicted under the Foreigners Act; Passport Act; Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act; Sections 3 to 10 of the Official Secrets Act, 1923; Prisoners convicted under sections 2 to 3 of the Criminal Amendment Act, 1961; prisoner convicted under sections 121 to 130 of the IPC; Prisoners convicted under section 107/109 of CrPC; Prisoners convicted under the Prevention of Corruption Act; Prisoners convicted of rape, attempt to rape or assault on women.
