Nagpur: A 19-year-old girl in Nagpur, Maharashtra, filed a fake complaint of gang rape in an exercise to marry her boyfriend, which led to Nagpur police deploying an army of its personnel to investigate the case. Officials said on Tuesday that more than 1,000 security personnel including Nagpur Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar and other senior officers investigated the matter here on Monday. The woman had lodged a complaint with the Kalamna police station around 11 am.
A senior police officer said that after scanning more than 250 CCTV footage from across the city, investigators came to the result that the woman had hatched the story of gang rape. The woman then told the police that she did so to marry her boyfriend. The officer did not say what the woman's real plans were. Earlier, in her complaint to the police, the woman alleged that she was raped by two persons at a secluded place near the Chikhali area. She claimed that the two men came in a white van when she was going for a music class in the Ramdaspeth area in the morning and asked her the way to Butibori. The officer quoted the woman's complaint as saying that the two men then forcibly dragged her into the van and covered her mouth with a cloth. The kidnappers took her to a secluded place and allegedly raped her. Realizing the seriousness of the case, the city police immediately started investigating it. The Kalamna police registered a case against unidentified persons under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police Sunil Fulari, and other senior officials rushed to the Sitabardi police station to investigate the case.
The officer said Kumar constituted 40 special teams of more than 1,000 police personnel to check CCTV footage, van trains in the city, and interrogate the woman's friends while sending the woman to Mayo Hospital for medical tests. He said that after more than six hours of hard work and questioning of more than 50 people, the police came to the result that the woman had hatched the story of gang rape. The officer said CCTV footage revealed that the woman got off a bus at Variety Chowk at 9.50 am, walked towards Jhansi Rani Chowk at 10 am, took an auto-rickshaw from Anand Talkies Chowk at 10.15 am and landed at Mayo Hospital at 10.25 am. Then, he took another auto rickshaw and landed at Chikhali Chowk at 10.54 p.m. He said a CCTV camera installed at a petrol pump showed the girl walking towards Kalamna police station at 11.40 am. He said that after receiving the news, the police questioned the woman and asked her if she had hatched the story. The girl told the police that she did so to marry her boyfriend.
