Guwahati: Rinku Sarma, an accused in the murder of Nandita Saikia of Moridhol College Dhemaji, was injured in police firing today. He tried to escape from custody by snatching a weapon. He was injured in police firing in self-defence.

Accused Rinku Sarma attacked her with a sharp weapon after she turned down the marriage proposal of Nandita, a degree student at Moridhal College in Dhemaji district. Nandita, who was critically injured in the attack, succumbed to her injuries at the hospital, where she was admitted after the incident that happened to her. Netizens then vented their anger. Meanwhile, the Dhemaji Lawyers Association (DLA) expressed anger over the attack and decided not to represent Rintu Sharma, accused of murder. No lawyer of the association will defend Sharma in this matter. The Assam cabinet meeting expressed deep grief over the incident and also decided to transfer the matter to a fast track court for speedy trial.

Agitation programs are underway in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts demanding death penalty for murderer Rintu Sarma, after Nandita Saikia, a student, was seriously injured during an attack by the accused in August. He later breathed his last in the hospital. In this connection, members of All India Women's Cultural Organization, All India Democratic Students Organization (AIDSO) and All India Democratic Youth Organization (Aido) of Lakhimpur district unit took out a torch procession from Nakri to Saboti in North Lakhimpur on Wednesday evening. During the protest, the members of the organizations raised slogans and demanded that the accused be tried in a fast track court and hanged. He also demanded the state government to ensure the safety of women in the state.
