Lucknow: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen President and Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi made a statement last Friday. He made the statement on the decision to increase the minimum age of marriage for women from 18 to 21 years. In fact, he did not like the decision at all and that is why he has strongly criticised the Central Government. In fact, Owaisi has made a statement in the matter saying, "PM Modi is like our Mohalla Uncle, who decides what we like to eat, who we like , and what we want to do."

Let us also tell all of you that last Wednesday, the Union Cabinet had approved a proposal to increase the minimum age of marriage of women from 18 to 21 years. You must all know that at present the minimum age of marriage for men is 21 years and for women is 18 years. However, the Bill is yet to be passed in Parliament. On the same issue, Owaisi said, "The Modi government has decided to increase the age of marriage for women to 21, it is patriarchy, that is what we expect from the government. Men and women of 18 years can sign contracts, start businesses, choose Prime Minister and elect MPs and MLAs, but can't get married? They can give their consent for sex and live-in relationships, but can't they choose their spouses?"

He further said that ''both men and women should be allowed to marry legally at the age of 18 as they are treated as adults by law for all other purposes at that age.'' He also said, "Despite the law, child marriage is taking place on a large scale. Every fourth woman in India was married before the age of 18 but only 785 criminal cases of child marriage were registered. If child marriages have already come down, it is because of education and economic progress, not criminal law. There are 1.2 crore children in the country who were married before the age of ten. Out of these, 84 per cent are from Hindu families and only 11 per cent are Muslims.''
