India/Germany: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday congratulated Olaf Scholz on being elected as Germany's Chancellor saying he looks forward to working closely with him to enhance the strategic alliance between India and Germany. Scholz was elected as Germany's ninth chancellor since World War II on Wednesday, ushering in a new era for the European Union nation after Angela Merkel's 16-year reign.
"My heartfelt congrats to @OlafScholz on his election as Germany's Federal Chancellor," Modi wrote on Twitter. "I look forward to working closely with you to further develop India-Germany Strategic Partnership," he said.
Scholz, the Social Democratic Party's (SPD) leader, won the secret vote in Parliament as expected, capping months of discussions following the SPD's narrow victory in federal elections in September, according to sources.
Scholz went to see German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who officially designated him as the country's next Chancellor, as per tradition. On Wednesday, he will be sworn in at the Parliament. Scholz served in Merkel's first coalition administration in the late 2000s as the Labor and Social Affairs Minister.
