New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated the first meeting of India's Constituent Assembly, which was charged with drafting the Constitution, on Thursday, and urged young people to study more about the momentous event.

"Today marks the 75th anniversary of the first meeting of our Constituent Assembly. Distinguished individuals from many areas of India, with diverse experiences and ideas, came together with one goal in mind: to provide the people of India with a good Constitution. "Tributes to these legends," the Prime Minister wrote on Twitter.

He said that Dr Sachchidananda Sinha, the Assembly's senior member, presided over the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly. "Acharya Kripalani welcomed him and led him to the Chair. Today, as we commemorate the 75th anniversary of our Constituent Assembly's historic meeting, I would encourage my young friends to learn more about the procedures of this august gathering and the distinguished stalwarts who were present. "It would be an intellectually stimulating experience," the PM added.

On December 9, 1946, the Constituent Assembly convened for the first time in New Delhi, at the Constitution Hall, currently known as the Central Hall of Parliament House. The Chamber, which had been magnificently decorated for the event, took on a new look that day, with a constellation of dazzling lamps hanging from the high ceilings and brackets on its walls.

The Constituent Assembly took over three years to finish its historic mission of drafting the Constitution for Independent India (two years, eleven months, and seventeen days to be exact). It held 11 sessions during the course of this time, totaling 165 days. The examination of the Draft Constitution took up 114 days of this time.
