USA: With Artemis 2, NASA is moving forward after the success of Artemis 1. The first crewed mission under the Artemis programme, Artemis 2, will include the first woman and the first person of colour on the moon. The four astronauts who will take part in the upcoming Moon mission are listed below.

The Orion spacecraft and the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket were tested during Artemis 1—the program's inaugural mission which was an unmanned test flight. Record-breaking feats were accomplished by Artemis 1 throughout the roughly 25-day mission.

The greatest distance ever travelled by a spacecraft made for humans was 432,210 kilometres. In comparison, the ISS orbits 1,000 times farther away from Earth than that.

Four astronauts will travel in Artemis 2 for ten days as it circles the Moon without making a landing. The mission is scheduled to take off in November 2024 onboard SLS, the most potent rocket in existence.

According to NASA, the mission will "validate the capabilities and techniques needed for humans to live and work in deep space, as well as the Orion spacecraft's life-support systems."

The Artemis 2 mission's four-person crew is made up of three NASA astronauts—Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, and Pilot Christina Hammock Koch—and one astronaut from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), Jeremy Hansen.

While Glover will be the first black astronaut on a lunar mission, Koch will be the first female astronaut to do so. Koch and Hansen will perform the roles of mission specialists.

Koch will make his second space flight on Artemis 2. On Expeditions 59, 60, and 61 of the International Space Station (ISS), she worked as a flight engineer.

Koch set the record for the "longest single spaceflight by a woman" by spending 328 days in space. She participated in the first all-female spacewalks as well.

As the first Canadian to fly to the moon, Hansen will make his first trip to space on Artemis 2. Before enlisting in the CSA, he served as a fighter pilot with the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Glover will fly into space again on Artemis 2. He previously worked as a pilot on the 168-day SpaceX Crew-1 mission for NASA. He was the first African American to spend six months in the ISS. He participated in four spacewalks while serving as a flight engineer on ISS Expedition 64.

Wiseman will make his second trip to space with Artemis 2. He participated in ISS Expedition 41, which ran from May to November 2014. Wiseman has been in space for more than 165 days.

During two trips outside the space station that lasted about 13 hours, he served as the lead spacewalker. From December 2020 to November 2022, Wiseman oversaw the NASA Astronaut Office.
