On the 116th birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, the nation remembers renowned Olympian and probably the best hockey player of all time. Dhyan Chand's birthday is celebrated as National Sports Day in his honor which this year falls on Sunday. Every year on August 29 the nation recalls his dedication and enthusiasm to make a change which is remarkable for years.
This year's event falls on the heels of India's best-ever Olympic performance, with seven medals won in the just-completed Games in Tokyo. Indian competitors are also earning medals at the current Paralympics, which are being held in Tokyo, Japan's capital city, like the Olympics. Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, paid tribute to Dhyan Chand on Twitter. ?Major Dhyan Chand gave Indian hockey a new identity via his commitment and accomplishments. His enthusiasm and drive to bring India honor, despite a lack of basic resources, will always inspire us,? said a rough translation of Shah's Hindi tweet. On August 6, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the country's top sports honor, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, will be renamed Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, in honor of the great Olympian, according to popular demand.
