It’s yet another sad day for Indian cinema! National Award-winning filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta is no more. The 77-year-old iconic filmmaker breathed his last this morning at around 6 am at his Kolkata residence. He was suffering from age related illness for long. Buddhadeb was even undergoing dialysis as was being treated for kidney problems over the past few years.

There are only a few Indian filmmakers who bring in as much admiration among the film fraternity as Buddhadeb Dasgupta. He had created a genre completely his own. He successfully blended the rhythm and imagery of poetry with those of cinema, and continues to experiment with both form and content.

The noted filmmaker’s approach to the art of filmmaking often found himself in a dilemma whether to mirror the impact of dramatic social change on the individual, reflect the change itself, or use the language, technique and aesthetics of cinema as a medium of self-expression, an expression that encompasses that change within himself.

Through his films, both documentaries and features, spanning more than 50 creative years, Buddhadeb Dasgupta tried to blend all these things, adding to them a realization of self-enquiry and self-discovery. From ‘Dooratwa’, ‘Tahader Katha’, ‘Kaalpurush’, ‘Janala’, ‘Grihajuddha’ to his last released film ‘Urojahaj’, the stamp of his individuality has been marked cinematographically as well as through his choice of literary source.
