Bhopal gas tragedy: poisonous chemical waste raises concern, people suffering even after 35 years

In the Bhopal gas tragedy that took place many years ago, 340 tons of toxic waste lying in the Union Carbide factory has not been destroyed even in 35 years. It has polluted ground water and soil within a radius of 4 km. Due to this, residents are getting serious diseases. Due to this waste, the level of harmful chemicals has increased in the ground water sources of 42 surrounding colonies. Earlier these chemicals were confined to the groundwater of 36 colonies. This has been confirmed in the report of Indian Institute of Toxicology.

For your information, let us tell you that 340 tons of toxic waste has been found in the factory of Dow Chemical, the company owned by Union Carbide. The process of destroying it a year and a half ago started in Pithampur, Indore. 10 tons of garbage was also destroyed. The process has since stalled. Member of Bhopal Group for Information and Action, Sathinath Sashadangi, says that after disposal of 10 tonnes of waste, the state government wants the Central Pollution Control Board to prepare the report of the wasted waste and continue its disposal under its own supervision. Whereas, the Central Pollution Control Board wants the local pollution control board and the government to destroy toxic waste. The waste is not being destroyed due to this confusion.

In this case, the gas-affected organizations have alleged that about 20 thousand tons of toxic waste have been suppressed in the Union Carbide factory premises. Apart from this, the waste coming out of the factory was dug in the pits in 21 places, so talking about 340 tons of waste alone will do nothing. Satinath Conspiracy member of Bhopal Group for Information and Action says that to remove this waste, a scientific study should be carried out within a radius of 5 kilometers around the factory and the process of removing the waste can be started.
