NATIONAL CONSUMER DAY 2019: National Consumer Day (National Consumer Day) is being celebrated like every year on 24th December this year. Its purpose is to spread awareness to consumers about their importance, their rights and responsibilities. On 24 December 1986, the Consumer Protection Act was passed on this day. After this, changes were made in the Act in 1991 and 1993. A Comprehensive Amendment was made in December 2002 to make the Consumer Protection Act more functional and purposeful and was implemented on 15 March 2003. The act is intended to provide effective safeguards to consumers against various forms of exploitation, such as bad goods or bad services and unfair trade practices.

Every year this day is celebrated on different themes, this year this day is being celebrated on the theme of Alternate Consumer Disputes Redressal. This act has been considered a historic milestone in the consumer movement in the country. In this act, consumers have been given the right to fight for their rights. Under this, the consumer has (i) right to safety (ii) right to information (iii) right to choice (iv) right to hearing (v) right to redress (vi) right to education.

Let us tell you that 24 December has been declared as National Consumer Day by the Government of India, because the President of India accepted the Act of the Historical Consumer Protection Act 1986 on the same day. Let us tell you that on 20 December 2018 last year, the Lok Sabha passed the Consumer Protection Bill 2018 to amend the Act. The bill includes strict punishment demands, jail terms and misleading advertisements and heavy fines for adulteration in food.
