Democracy in the secular country means the rule of the common people. On Monday, former President Pranab Mukherjee spoke of the need to strengthen democracy to meet this definition in Indian perspective. He said that due to increase in the number of voters, the people's representatives have become disproportionate. The Lok Sabha seat number should be increased from 543 to one thousand for the correct and equal representation of all.

Let us tell you that the current seats of Lok Sabha were determined on the basis of 1971 census. The population of the country was 55 crores in this census. Due to the concept of one seat on the population of one million, then the number of members of the Lok Sabha was fixed at 543. India's population has reached 121 crores in the 2011 census. This means that more than double the population of 1971. In this context, an average of 22.29 lakh people now sit on a Lok Sabha member. This ratio needs to be reduced. Only then can we realize the ideal imagination of public representativeness.

If the Lok Sabha seats were increased according to the population, then in many states, these seats will be less than the present in many states. An analysis by Carnegie India suggests that if the Lok Sabha seats were decided on the basis of the 2011 census, the seats in the southern states would be reduced. Seven seats will be reduced in Tamil Nadu, five in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, five in Kerala. There will be eight seats in Uttar Pradesh, six in Bihar and five seats in Rajasthan. In this case, this decision can also become a reason for controversy.
