Due to the failure of NHAI to ensure availability despite the substantial announcement of FASTag, the government has decided to extend the mandatory date of FASTag by 15 days. Under this, no penalty will be charged till December 15 for entering the FASTag lane without FASTag vehicles. Earlier, after 1 December, there was a provision to recover double the toll from vehicles without FASTag entering the FASTag lane.

This decision has been taken after the review meeting of Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari with the officials of NHAI. In the meeting, Gadkari put up a class of NHAI officers to ensure that people do not provide FASTag on time.

For the past several months, NHAI officials were giving false information to the Road Ministry about the preparation of FASTag. They were constantly assuring that everything was going well. On this basis, in the press conference of November 22, Gadkari announced to make FASTag available free till December 1. It is a different matter that the Minister's announcement failed to fulfill the NHAI promise. On the basis of NHAI, Gadkari had also announced free FASTag on all the POS of NHAI till December 1, but NHAI was free of sufficient number on a single POS, could not provide FASTag. The places where kiosks of free FASTag installed were also taken up later.
