National Sports Day: The first National Sports Day was celebrated in 2012 as a memorial to Major Dhyanchand. Major Dhyanchand, who was born on August 29, 1905, went on to become a legendary figure in the sport of hockey. He began his career in the regimental squad of the British Indian Army.

National Sports Day Significance: The purpose of National Sports Day is to raise public awareness of the value of sports and the advantages of physical activity. Around the nation, a number of events are organised with the goal of encouraging people to participate in sports.

Outstanding athletes in the nation are recognised on this day with awards like the Arjuna Award, Dhyan Chand Award, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, and Dronacharya Award. At a ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the prizes are given out by the President of India.

However, the celebration of National Sports Day had remained low-key for the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
