It is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of Swami Vivekananda, the creator of modern India. It was announced for the first time by the Indian government in the year 1984 to celebrate the birthday of Swami Vivekananda as National Youth Day. Since then (1985), it started celebrating as National Youth Day across the country.
