BRUSSELS: The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has approved the deployment of four new battle groups along the alliance's eastern flank, encompassing Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia, according to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg during a press conference.

The four new battle units deployed along the NATO alliance's eastern flank were approved on Thursday, according to reports. From the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea, a total of eight NATO battle groups will be positioned along the alliance's eastern frontier.

In the backdrop of the Russia-Ukraine crisis that began in February, the organization's heads of state were summoned to an extraordinary summit to discuss additional support for Ukraine.

Meanwhile, NATO's top military commander has activated the alliance's chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear defensive elements, and allies are deploying additional chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear defences, according to Stoltenberg.
