BRUSSELS: NATO said on Friday that two Russian warplanes approached coalition naval ships in the Baltic Sea in an "unsafe and unprofessional manner" during routine operations.

After the Russian pilots' failure to respond to communications, NATO's Maritime Command reported that the jets took off on Thursday morning "at an altitude of 300 feet (91 m) and a range of 80 yards (73 m) in force".

According to a statement, "NATO considered the conversation to be unsafe and unprofessional due to the altitude and proximity of the aircraft, as well as the fact that it was conducted over a known threat area, which was active for air defense training."
