Amritsar: Punjab Congress unit president Navjot Singh Sidhu has filed an affidavit in the top court in the 33-year-old road rage case. In it, Sidhu has appealed for dismissal of the review petition filed in the case. Describing his political and sports career as unblemished, Sidhu has said that even as an MP, his record has been unmatched. Sidhu has told the Supreme Court that he is a law-abiding person. A fine has already been imposed on them in this case. They should not be punished any further.
In the 1988 road rage case, Sidhu was fined Rs 1,000. The victim's family had filed a review petition against it. According to media reports, a notice was sent to Sidhu in September 2018 on the plea of the victim's family. Gurnam Singh, a 65-year-old man, was killed in the incident. Sidhu along with his accomplice Rupinder Singh Sandhu are also accused in the case. In response to the notice, Sidhu said, "As a politician, I have done a lot of social and public interest. I have helped all those in need. He has collaborated in setting up many projects. So I don't deserve to be punished anymore. There was no old rivalry between the accused and the victim. At the same time, no weapon was used by me.''
The matter is being heard by a bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and Sanjay Kishan Kaul. In May 2018, Sidhu was fined Rs 1,000 by the Supreme Court itself. Sidhu was charged under Section 323 IPC. It can be a maximum of 1 year in jail and a fine of Rs 1,000 or both together. Advocate Siddharth Luthra is cross-examining on behalf of the victim's family. The victim's family has demanded a re-examination of all the evidence from the apex court.
