The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has made significant changes to its textbooks by removing the Preamble to the Constitution from all Class 3 books and retaining it only in two Class 6 textbooks for the current academic year.

Previously, Class 6 textbooks included the Preamble in several subjects: the Hindi book "Durva," the English book "HoneySuckle," the science book, and all three social science books – "Our Pasts-I," "Social and Political Life-I," and "The Earth Our Habitat." In the updated versions, the Preamble is now found only in the science textbook "Curiosity" and the Hindi textbook "Malhar."

In the revised social science textbook "Exploring Society: India and Beyond," the Preamble has been replaced by a section focusing on fundamental rights and fundamental duties.

These changes are part of the updates aligned with the National Education Policy introduced in 2020 by the National Democratic Alliance government.

Previously, the Preamble was included at the beginning of textbooks for both grades. However, it has now been omitted from all Class 3 books. For Class 6, the Preamble remains only in the science textbook "Curiosity" and the Hindi book "Malhar."

The removal of the Preamble has sparked controversy, with critics accusing the government of undermining the Constitution. Congress spokesperson Dr. Shama Mohammad has condemned the move, stating on X: “The Preamble to the Constitution has been dropped from Class 3 and Class 6 textbooks issued by NCERT this year. The BJP government is attacking the Constitution. Parents must unite to protest this attempt to erase our history!”

In addition to this change, NCERT has reduced the number of environmental studies books for Class 6 from three to one. The updated social science textbook for Class 6 does not include the Preamble but covers fundamental rights and duties.

While the new Class 6 English textbook, "Poorvi," features the national anthem and the Sanskrit book, "Deepakam," includes both the national anthem and the national song, the Preamble is missing from both.
