NEW DELHI: A day after NCP leader Sharad Pawar made the decision to leave his post as party leader, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA Jitendra Awhad resigned from his post as general secretary of the party on Wednesday, May 3. The MLA claimed that following Sharad Pawar's declaration, every officeholder in Maharashtra's Thane area resigned.

"I have informed Sharad Pawar Saheb of my resignation from the position of National General Secretary. After Pawar Saheb's statement, all of Thane NCP's office holders also submitted their resignations, Jitendra Awhad said in a press briefing.

The sudden decision of Sharad Pawar still has the NCP workers reeling, therefore Jitendra Awhad's departure comes as a fresh shock. On Tuesday, the party members criticised the leader's choice at the location of the book launch and even threatened to stage a sit-in protest.

Sharad Pawar has stated that he will no longer be running for office but will still be involved in politics. The founder of the NCP declared that he would keep working for both the nation and the state of Maharashtra.

"I still have three years left on my Rajya Sabha term. From now on, I won't run for office. I will focus more on issues affecting the state and the nation over the next three years. I won't accept any further obligations. My political career began on May 1st, 1960. May Day was observed yesterday. One must consider stopping someplace after such a drawn-out political career. Gluttony is not acceptable. After all these years, I will never adopt the stance of adhering to a perspective. Thus, you might experience unease. However, I've made the decision to leave my position as NCP leader, said Pawar.

Senior party leader Ajit Pawar announced that Sharad Pawar has agreed to reconsider his decision to step down as the party leader as the NCP members continued to protest the choice.

"We informed Sharad Pawar that the workforce is quite irate. Along with having a working president, we also informed him that party members want him to continue serving as party president. He stated that he would need two to three days to reconsider his choice, said Ajit Pawar.
