Chennai: The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has taken a serious note of the case of 12th class student Lavanya who committed suicide after being hurt by the attempts of forced conversion in Tamil Nadu. Commission chairman Priyank Kanungo will visit Thanjavur on January 30 and 31 to investigate the 17-year-old suicide case of Lavanya at Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Michaelpatta in the district. At the same time, the BJP has demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter.

In its press note, the commission said the NCPCR had received a complaint that the minor student was forced to convert to Christianity. When she was not ready, the school administration gave her corporal punishment, prevented her from going home and toilets and utensils were cleaned. Fed up with the torture, the student consumed poison and committed suicide. The Commission also said that in this case, it had asked the Tamil Nadu government to extend necessary cooperation to the NCPCR team to investigate the matter, but the Stalin government expressed its inability to cite the code of conduct to be implemented for the local body elections. Even after this, the commission's team will go there for an inquiry. Along with this, the Superintendent of Police and the Investigating Officer of the district have been asked to be present there.

During this time, the NCPCR team will also meet the parents of the deceased student and his classmate. Along with this, he will also meet the doctor treating the victim, the doctor who conducted her post-mortem and the school administration. If any local person there wants to meet the Commission, the team will talk to him also. Lavanya had been staying in St. Michael's Girls' Hostel for the past five years. The government-aided Christian missionary school was pressurising him to convert to Christianity. Fed up with the constant harassment of the school administration, he tried to commit suicide by consuming poison. On the night of January 9, Lavanya was taken to the local clinic after he developed discomfort and vomiting. 85% of his lungs were poisoned and he succumbed to his injuries in the hospital on January 19, 2022.

In the video that is going viral on social media, Lavanya talks about the atrocities committed with her in an unconscious state. Originally, the video is in Tamil, translated by The Commune. According to this, the video says, "My name is Lavanya. They (the school) had asked my parents in my presence if they could convert me to Christianity and assist me in further studies. I don't believe they scolded me. Lavanya also took the name of Rachel Mary, who had tortured her during this time.''
