NEW DELHI: The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is creating more than 8,000 parking spaces for vehicles at stations along the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor, according to a statement released on Thursday.
The corridor features 25 stations from Delhi to Meerut. The largest parking area will be at Meerut South station, accommodating around 300 cars and 900 two-wheelers. The second-largest will be at Sarai Kale Khan station in Delhi, with space for approximately 275 cars and 900 two-wheelers. These parking areas will also have electric charging stations to promote clean energy and efficient last-mile connectivity.
The Namo Bharat train services are enhancing regional connectivity in the NCR with high-speed links. The strategically placed RRTS stations, spaced five to ten kilometers apart, aim to encourage public transport use. NCRTC is implementing measures to ensure excellent first and last-mile connectivity, including ample parking space for commuters to park their personal vehicles and use the Namo Bharat trains safely and comfortably. This initiative aims to reduce the number of private vehicles on the Delhi-Meerut route, decrease road accidents, and lower air pollution.
The full implementation of the Delhi-Meerut corridor is expected to increase the public transport share from 37 percent to 63 percent. The NCRTC is also exploring various last-mile connectivity options and has recently invited expressions of interest for providing different types of feeder services at all 25 stations.
The entire corridor's parking facilities will accommodate over 1,600 cars and 6,500 two-wheelers. Currently, there are no parking fees for commuters parking for up to 10 minutes for pick and drop. Beyond that, fees are Rs 5 for bicycles, Rs 10 for two-wheelers, and Rs 25 for cars for up to six hours; Rs 5 for bicycles, Rs 25 for two-wheelers, and Rs 50 for cars for six to 12 hours; and Rs 10 for bicycles, Rs 30 for two-wheelers, and Rs 100 for cars for more than 12 hours. Night parking fees during non-operational hours are Rs 20 for bicycles, Rs 60 for two-wheelers, and Rs 200 for cars.
A 34-kilometer section of this corridor is already operational, featuring eight RRTS stations with parking facilities. These parking lots also accommodate auto rickshaws. Special provisions for pickup and drop-off facilities have been made, allowing vehicles from the main road easy access. Additionally, separate parking spaces and ramps have been designated for specially-abled passengers to facilitate seamless travel on Namo Bharat trains.
NCRTC is also planning to install battery-swapping stations in its parking areas for both commuters and last-mile service providers, promoting sustainable transport at a cost-effective price. These stations will encourage the use of electric vehicles and improve last-mile connectivity for commuters.
