Shastri said, said: "Excessive negative campaign against the Prime Minister has not gone down well with the public." He further told news agency ANI that the public rejected the "chowkidar chor hai" slogan. "Congress failed to address public issues," he said while commenting about Congress Chief Ministers who "failed" to gauge the public sentiment. "A better performance in Congress-ruled states would have yielded better results," he said.

Meanwhile, Congress president Rahul Gandhi suffered a humiliating loss in Amethi. Smriti Irani further expressed her delight on winning from the Amethi Lok Sabha seat and said that she intends to do a lot of work in the constituency. However, senior party leader Sonia Gandhi successfully contested from the Rae Bareli seat. She defeated Dinesh Pratap Singh of the Bharatiya Janata Party by a difference of 1.67 lakh votes.
