The new ranking system of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) will be launched from January 1, 2020. FIH detailed the new ranking system after the last 12 months of research, analysis, and testing. The FIH Executive Board, in a meeting held in Lausanne, has decided to introduce a new match-based ranking system instead of the current tournament-based world rankings.

Due to the tournament-based ranking system, the lower-ranked teams had less chance of getting points. In this, 60% of international hockey matches did not get any ranking points. There is a need to change the ranking system of FIH. In the new match world ranking system, 2 teams will get basis points for each FIH participating in a recognized match. In this, 3 things will be kept in mind to give points to the teams. The outcome of the match, the ranking of the teams and the importance of the match. This will only give more points to the teams and this will encourage the teams to play more matches. The new system for assessing FIH rankings will not affect the current status of teams.

Each country will begin 2020 with the previous ranking position and the number of ranking points it has finished in 2019. The new model is based on the ELO rating system that is the basis of the ranking system in other sports. When 2 countries play matches against each other, there will be an exchange of points between the 2 countries. The more points a team gets in a match, the more the other team loses the same number of points. The team will get more points if it defeats the team above its ranking. On the other hand, the team will lose more points if it loses to a team ranked lower than its own.
